Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere these days. It’s in the media, it’s in every startup plan, it’s in the words of tech giants and futurologists such as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. – Heck, it’s starting to be in politicians rants as well.
Some argue that AI will create masses of unemployed people, some others that it will eventually make humanity obsolete, some others believe it’s a fantastic opportunity of progress and prosperity. Truth is, AI is inevitable – and it will shape our future.
Artificial Intelligence is starting to make its mark on music production and creation as well. It’s already there, and you can be a part of this sparking new industry
Amper is a collaborative (human and machine) music composing platform that employs AI for the creation of soundtracks and royalty free compositions you can use in your own work or share with the community.
The user (you) inputs some generic specifications: the genre of music you want to compose, the instruments needed for the composition, key, the mood you want to set, the tempo. You use this simple dialog below:
You create regions on the timeline with these specifications and click on the “Render” button. That’s where the magic happens: Amper starts writing a piece of music and renders it on the region you selected.
Amper takes from 1 to 2 minutes to create your piece of music, and it’s totally autonomous in the process.
The piece of music now reflects the choices you did in the “Editing” box. If you don’t like the results, you can tweak the parameters or tell Amper re-generate that region with the same settings, and it will write a new composition automatically. The new composition with the same settings will be different from the previous one? Of course.
In the example below, I created two different regions. Two very different regions in style, instruments and mood. One is an “Epic Cinematic” piece of music full of synths and drama and the other one is a joyful folk-style little song.
I also added a “swish to hit” event towards the middle of the folk region, just to see what happened. Now the project looked like this:
You can added a lot of different “events” to your music and they will blend seamlessly into the region when you click the red Render button.
An amazing AI powered feature of Amper is called “Match”.
Basically, you can create two different regions and then match them together according to certain creteria – the Intelligence engine will try to make even two very different pieces of music (like the ones i purposefully created) blend together
Here I told the Match engine to blend instrumentation together.
You can select Rhythm, Harmony, Tempo and Instrumentation or any combination of the elements.
I was able to complete this weird 2.35 minutes soundtrack in less than 10 minutes without any previous knowledge of the platform.
That’s quite impressive if you ask me!
